Friendly Match vs Shakespeare, Sun 16th June 2019, London Fields

"To be or not to be that is the question"

by Chris Rice

Some other questions we found ourselves asking:

- bowl first or bat,

- aggressive from the start or build slowly and accelerate later,

- did the ball bounce twice before the popping crease or not,

- when is the ball dead or alive,

- could the rope be put out any quicker than it was on Sunday?

Needless to say, when the Laws of cricket are extracted from Carl’s bag and need to be referred to twice, the match was not with out points of interest.

Both skippers planned on batting first, much to the surprise of the rest of their respective teams. Shakespear won the toss and batted. Needless to say they did well, and we were good in the field bar two bad drops, but there were numerous fielding highlights and great work behind the stumps by Ferny.

In all 240 was a good score, but not unchaseable, considering we had one of the strongest batting lines up the Sunday side has seen in a while. Alas when it came to batting, "poor Yorick I knew him well" (sic - ed). No one troubled the scorers past the tune of 16.

Still we were very, very good at putting the rope back out. Never before in the history of LFCC has the rope been put out so quickly and efficiently. And I will leave the match report on this high note.
