Friendly Match vs Homerton CC, Sun 14th May 2017, London Fields

London Fields (267-7) beat Homerton (167 all out) by 100 runs

by Ben Sanders

Having been told that Homerton were a bit understrength on the batting side, a gentleman's agreement was made and LFCC batted first. Things looked ominous for the Homerton bowlers from the off when LFCC skipper Alec smashed the opening delivery of this game over long off for six.

This set the tone for Al who played a swash buckling innings consisting mainly of boundaries. AG, who shared the opening berth with Al, was pulled along in his wake; playing some nice strokes around the park.

Al raced to his fifty and showed his disdain for running by hitting 15 maximums by the time he was stumped for a quick-wristed 76. Michael Warner came to the crease and with a technique honed on the hard decks of his beloved Australia, initially struggled with the slow bowling and lack of pace in the pitch.

AG fell the ball after getting his fifty (bowling by a full swinging ball). This brought Colonel to the crease who was eager to take the opportunity to have a long bat. As with Michael, Ben scratched around for a bit before settling into some nudging and nurdling and it wasn't long before they were both making the scoreboard tick over nicely (Colonel even getting an aggressive pull shot out of locker at one stage). Warner especially found his range and hit a couple of sweet boundaries. His exuberance was his undoing in the end as his was caught for 35 off the edge going for another big one.

Robin Friend, down at an unaccustomed number 5, strode to the wicket and did what he does best: hit the ball to the boundary. Robin amassed a quick fire 40 which included one particularly sweetly hit 6 that disappeared into the lido never to be seen again. Taimoor, Troy and Oli all made quick appearances to help LFCC reach a decent 276-7 with Ben being run out on the last ball for 45 (Oli thinking he was only two away from the half century so called him back).

After some lovely chocolate cake, courtesy of skipper Alec's better half, Hugh and Laurie opened the bowling. Homerton looked to score quickly and pounced on anything that was short or loose. They were 50-1 after 5 overs and raced to 104 off 10. Laurie removed one opener with a lovely full ball that was plumb lbw. Troy came on and got the spirited number 3 with a ball that found the edge and AG took a regulation catch behind. Troy's second wicket was a thing of beauty as skipper Al, at first slip, leapt salmon-like back, across and high to his right to pluck a flying ball with a single hand that had flown off the batsman's edge and was racing to the boundary.

London Fields started to wrestle control back with some disciplined bowling from Mark Holden and Sanders. The Colonel bagged a wicket, bowling their no. 4 with a customary in-dipper. McCrindle then decided to change tack and bring on the mystery spinners. With Taimoor and Oli bowling in tandem the runs started to dry up and wickets began to fall.

It was a delight to witness and celebrate Taimoor's debut wicket for the club, which I am sure there will be many more of. With the chance of victory slipping away Homerton hunkered down and the last wickets were hard to get. With grey clouds gathering and rain imminent, Friendly came on to give it a rip and fifth ball of his over induced an expansive hoick from Homerton's no. 10, which only sent the ball straight and up, whereupon AG positioned himself and waited for its return. Safely snaffled, Homerton were all out for 176. A win by 100 runs in the end and a welcome double-win weekend for the first time this season.
